New Laser cutter

Some of you might know that the shed has purchased a laser cutter. We expect the machine to arrive by the end of this week. The new laser cutter will be positioned just outside the shed's office and will need some installation processes before it will be fully functional.

Once we have the laser cutter up and running, we will send some information out in the newsletter to let you know what fantastic things we can do with this nice piece of equipment and how you can learn how to use this machine.

Start searching online for laser cutter ideas or projects - there are endless possibilities.

TIDY Systems Administration and Support

Welcome David French to the TIDY team. David has very kindly volunteered to assist myself in the System Administration of our Membership Management System TIDYHQ.

As David's background is in Computer Science and Software Development, I'm sure he'll come up to speed in the next month or so, as he juggles his Work/Shed balance.

His first priority will be take over the Shed Website and look at improving the look and feel and functionality, so Group Leaders, be aware, he maybe in contact with you shortly.

Our aim is to provide full support coverage for TIDYHQ between both of us, and over time, look at how we can better integrate other systems we have in place.

New Shed Badges

We are progressing well with replacing existing badges. We have now completed A-K (first names).

We have removed the Badges of Members whose Membership has expired some months ago. For Members who have received recent Renewal Notices, please pay your annual fees as soon as possible.

Some Members may take their badge home, so could you please replace it with your new Badge on the board, when you are next in the Shed.

We hope to have all new Badges replaced within the next fortnight.

Train the Trainer Course -- Blue Dot Training

We are still looking for more Blue Dot trainers in 2024. No special skills are required. If you have your blue dot you already have the skills to be a trainer; and training others will certainly help you improve your own skills.

Later this month/ early next month we will be running a 'Train the Trainer' session for the Blue Dot course. The course will provide you with everything you need to know to run a training session. The training sessions can be programmed to suit your availability.

Our objective is to train enough trainers so that it isn't a burden for anyone and you will each only have to do a few courses per year.

If you'd like to join the training team please let me know by replying to this email.

Donations for SOS Children's Orphanage in Botswana

Thank you to all the Shedders that have contributed to this cause. There is still some room in the Container, so let’s try and give it a final push.

As the Community Liaison

Co-ordinator for the Shed, I have also been posting this request for Donations to a number of Community Facebook sites that I am a member of, with great success. Hopefully we will be able to help Wolf fill up his container, within the next month, so if you have any children's items please bring them to the Shed and store them in the designated shelves at the front.

Any questions please contact me (Steve Gerreyn at this email address community-liaison.msclaremont@mail.tidyhq.com)

Wolf Martinick is the Executive Chairman of Botala Energy and one of our long standing Shed members .

Wolf and his company have been working with the SOS Children's Orphanage for the last year donating clothes, toys and sporting equipment for the children there. The Village has been operating in Botswana for the past 30 years and has over 420 children and 48 families that it supports.

They are dedicated to helping the local community in Botswana and feel that supporting the Orphanage helps to support these children and prepare them for a brighter future. The Orphanage works with children into adulthood providing them education and support; however, they have a limited budget for each child under their care which is why our donations are so important to them. Their continued support allows them to dedicate more resources towards education and providing for the children without having to worry about clothing and toys, which is just one small way they can help.

The values and goals of the SOS Children's Village of; breaking the cycle; enabling self-reliance through education and empowerment; securing basic needs; and building a foundation for a happy life align with those of Botala Energy. By empowering the future generations to take charge of their lives through these donations they can empower progress within Botswana.

Our Shed has some Shelving Units at the front, where we store our projects. There are also some dedicated Shelves set aside where we are collecting children's clothes and toys for this great cause. So if any of you or your family can help by donating any of these items, please drop them off at the Shed in the Shelving space.

The Shed is really behind this initiative so we will be continuing to repeat this article in our Weekly Newsletters over the next few weeks.

Group Updates

 Flight Simulator Group Update-Nick Bagshaw

Following on from the excellent work our Sheddies did to construct the cockpit set-up, work in recent times has concentrated on getting the SIM’s computer hardware and software operating in a stable way.

We have been very fortunate in having Gwyn Perrett and Jason Beringer, both very experienced operators of the type of Boeing 737-800 flight SIM we have, prepared to adjust their work schedules (both are full-time in their jobs) and spend a substantial number of Fridays at the SIM over the last few months. They contribute their time free-of-charge as well as donating minor hardware items which enhance the SIM.

However, we have now reached a crunch point. Despite our experts’ efforts, we haven’t been able to establish a stable working condition – something absolutely essential for trouble-free operation in the future. The issue is the current out dated Computer Hardware and Software we currently have. The computer is more than 10 years old and is running an old, outdated version of Microsoft Windows.

A submission to purchase a new computer with the required specifications and current versions of the software will go to the Shed management Committee shortly. Once acquired and setup it is estimated that it will only take a couple of days to get the system up and running.

We will keep you all updated as we get nearer to launch this fantastic facility.
